ALL WILL BE WELL... Bullshit!
Ivan carefully peered around the corner of the building, the wind whipping around and forcing him to grip the gargoyle at the edge of the roof more firmly. The ledge was narrow... too narrow, and Ivan could feel the slickness beneath his shoes. He hadnât dressed for climbing... He hadnât dressed to run for his life...
From the start, heâd felt that uneasy gnawing in his stomach. Dinner had been difficult, trying to maintain a smile and positive outlook as he toasted with the others as they celebrated, and afterward it only grew worse as Dov detailed what the night would entail.
Their destination would be Montmartre, and the apartment of the woman believed to possess the larger of the two missing pieces. Adèle Rouset began her life innocently enough, but the allure of Parisienne society and celebrity had been one she could not resist. Twenty years after arriving, the middle-aged courtesan had cemented her position as one of the most prominent socialites of the city. Her parties were the most sought-after invitation in the city, the âdatesâ she arranged for her friends always discreet, and her opinion and taste highly valued even in the most conservative and traditional circles.
Tonight, one of her famous parties was in full swing, and Dov insisted this was the night, this was their chance. The volume of people at the party, and Madame Rouset sufficiently distracted by them, would give them the window they needed to get in and search for the doll. If they found it, they could â
âWait,â Ivan interrupted. âWhat do you mean âifâ? This is where the piece is... isnât it?â He frowned as a moment of hesitation lengthened into an awkward silence. Ivan sighed, barely containing his agitation, and rubbed his eyes. He hoped the movement would be enough to convey the full measure of his irritation at this development... and that it would clear the gray that was trying to take a hold of his vision. The gray itself was not a bother; he could function without color, especially at night, when the whole world is effectively in gray anyway. In fact, he often preferred gray-vision at night, as it made it easier for him to see to get around, and to avoid people who were obviously up to no good.
Unfortunately, gray-vision came with black eyes, and right now Ivan did not want to deal with the reactions, and the explanations, and the panic... He cringed inside, thinking of how Anna would look at him if she knew... And a glance at Dov caused a different fear to grow. Dovâs behavior at dinner had been unusual even for Dov. He had been loud and demonstrative, as if he wanted someone to see him and, more importantly, remember him being there. Several times, Ivan had tried to casually glance around the restaurant, wondering if he would spot whoever it was that Dov was putting on the show for, but he had seen no one who raised suspicion. Heâd even scented several times, carefully tasting the air of the restaurant.
